What is a Work Group?
North West Three Maths Hub provides access to Work Groups, professional learning communities and Teacher Research Groups. Work Groups are used by Maths Hubs to support school and professional development, led by experienced teachers known as LLMEs. Participants from local schools meet regularly to collaborate, share ideas, and trial approaches in their own classrooms, embedding learning across their departments before returning to reflect and refine together. Each Work Group forms part of a Network Collaborative Project, contributing to wider improvement by developing practice, evaluating impact on pupils, and improving outcomes for all.

Mastering Number in Reception and KS1
Best Start in Life
This programme will support pupils to develop good number sense and allow maths leads to understand how to embed effective practice in Reception and in Key Stage 1, to ensure all pupils have the best start in life.
This project aims to secure firm foundations in the development of good number sense for all children from Reception through to Year 1 and Year 2. The aim over time is that children will leave KS1 with fluency in calculation and a confidence and flexibility with number. Attention will be given to key knowledge and understanding needed in Reception classes, and progression through KS1 to support success in the future.
These short videos give a flavour of Mastering Number happening with different age groups. The teachers explain how the programme has benefited all pupils in their classes, providing firm foundations for later work in maths.

Professional Development Programmes
The Maths Hub professional development experience involves teachers working with colleagues from other schools as well as their own in either a Work Group if Community. This is led by one of our Local Leaders of Maths Education (LLME) who have expertise in their particular field. All the CPD offered by the Maths Hubs takes the form of one of three types of professional development.
This national programme – now in its sixth year – aims to secure firm foundations in the development of good number sense for all children from Reception through to Year 1 and Year 2. Early Years Work Groups
This one-year programme supports Reception teachers to develop specialist knowledge for teaching maths, and use a teaching for mastery approach as exemplified in the NCETM’s The Essence of Mathematics Teaching for Mastery.
It will enable participants to explore number, shape, space and pattern. Reception teachers (and teaching assistants) will also explore how children’s learning in all these areas can be supported through the development of oracy, spatial reasoning and executive function.
