Every Work Group is led, at local level, by a teacher experienced in leading maths-specific CPD.

Leadership in Maths Education
An introduction
Who are local leaders of mathematics education?
Every Maths Hub has developed, and maintains, a group of individuals—based at a range of different schools and institutions—who lead all local work run by the hub. Known as local leaders of mathematics education, or LLMEs, these people draw on their own experience and expertise to support the work of the hub and lead other teachers’ professional development. LLMEs could be Maths Hub Leads, Assistant Maths Hub Leads, Teaching for Mastery Leads, or Work Group Leads.
Across the Maths Hubs Network, projects exist to enhance this leadership capacity and to support those seeking to become local leaders of maths education (LLME).
- Developing Mastery Specialists in primary, secondary and post-16
- Running national workshops for Work Group Leads to learn from each other
Supporting teachers who have attained, or who are seeking to achieve the NCETM Accredited PD Lead status and School Development Lead status.
Joanna Mousley – Headteacher at St Peter and St Paul Catholic Primary School, Knowsley
“Our School has had a Primary Mastery Specialist on our staff for 4 years, during which time there has been a real excitement around maths with teaching staff and pupils. There has been a real uplift in the children’s knowledge in maths, their use of mathematical vocabulary and their confidence in maths lessons. In turn we have seen an uplift in attainment in the last couple of years. This is not ring fenced to the class of the Primary Mastery Specialist but other teachers use his talents and knowledge to enhance their lessons and pupils attainment.”
2025/26 Programmes
In the first year of the programme, three residentials – one in each term – provide an opportunity to develop understanding the Five Big Ideas of teaching for mastery in depth and to focus on the specialist subject knowledge required to design lessons that unfold the maths for all children.
The Secondary Mastery Specialist Programme enables secondary maths teachers to become experts in teaching for mastery. Over a minimum of three years, participants first work on their own understanding and practice, then with their own department, then with other departments as a Local Leader of Maths Education for their Maths Hub.
Following the success of the Primary and Secondary Programmes, we are now seeking Further Education establishments to nominate ‘lead teachers’ to take part in our two-year PD programme for Post-16 GCSE/FSQ Mastery Specialist. This programme is aimed at those who teach GCSE Mathematics resit and/or Functional Skills Qualifications (FSQs).
These programmes are for expert teachers of maths (all phases: Early Years / Primary / Secondary / Post-16) who have existing commitments and responsibility for designing, leading and evaluating maths teacher professional development, and who will lead maths professional development beyond their own institution. Participants must be based at a school/institution in England.
The programme is for colleagues working with school and subject leaders to improve maths teaching and learning in a school or group of schools other than their own. Participants will be expected to commit to the full programme of activities and will need the support of the headteacher of their own school and/or their MAT. The programme is for teachers working in England only.
