Primary Work Groups
Work Groups (sometimes known as Teacher Research Groups, or TRGs) meet regularly to plan, observe and discuss teaching for mastery. In between meetings, teachers explore mastery approaches in their own classrooms and across their school.

What is a Work Group?
North West Three Maths Hub offer teachers and teaching assistants opportunities to enhance their mathematics skills through pedagogy and practice. We offer colleagues access to Work Groups, professional learning communities and Teacher Research Groups. The names of these activities change depending on which route teachers/TAs apply to be part of.
Whatever you choose/apply to be part of, the aim is always to develop classroom practice and to improve maths teaching in a school.

Nik Smith – Headteacher, Dovedale Primary School, Liverpool
“We feel incredibly fortunate and proud to have a Primary Mastery Specialist in our staff team. She has been absolutely instrumental in ensuring the smooth rolling out of mastery practice across all year groups in our large 4 form entry primary school. She has received exceptional training and support from the Maths Hub which has enabled her to organise and facilitate quality CPD delivery to our own staff. Her profound impact on teacher pedagogical knowledge and deepening of pupil understanding of mathematical concepts has cemented a cohesive, consistent and driven approach to improving both attitudes and standards in maths. She continues to generate positivity and innovative thinking with regard to the subject, testament to the expert support received from other mastery specialists and colleagues in the Maths Hub.”

Professional Development Programmes
The Maths Hub professional development experience involves teachers working with colleagues from other schools as well as their own in either a Work Group if Community. This is led by one of our Local Leaders of Maths Education (LLME) who have expertise in their particular field. All the CPD offered by the Maths Hubs takes the form of one of three types of professional development.

“Having a Primary Mastery Specialist at our school has brought a number of benefits to our own school. The pupils in Anthony’s class are receiving a consistently excellent Maths mastery curriculum, leading to all children having a deep understanding of mathematical concepts. In addition to this, Anthony is sharing his expert knowledge in this area as he coaches staff within our own school, thus further embedding our teaching for mastery approach.”
